Plan outdoor pig fencing

Start by deciding whether the fence must keep domestic pigs in, keep feral swine out, divide pasture, or perform more than one of those jobs.

Containment and exclusion are different design problems. Local disease risk, wildlife pressure and regulation can change the required system.

Pigs test the bottom of a fence differently from cattle. They investigate, root and can exploit gate gaps or weak ground-level sections. A useful plan therefore begins at the soil line, then adds the right combination of physical barrier, electric deterrent, training and inspection.

First, define the boundary.

Domestic-pig containment is the job of keeping owned animals inside the production area. Feral-swine exclusion is the job of reducing entry by wildlife that may damage feed, challenge the fence or increase disease exposure. A rotational divider inside a secure perimeter has a third, lower-consequence role.

Do not copy one detail into every role.A temporary trained-animal divider should not automatically be treated as the farm’s only perimeter or as a wildlife-exclusion barrier.

Build the system in layers.

Secure physical perimeter

Choose a barrier and gate arrangement that addresses the animals, ground conditions and expected pressure. Inspect the bottom edge, low spots, drainage crossings and changes in grade before deciding the line is complete.

Inside electric deterrent

Extension guidance notes that pigs may root beneath woven fencing and that low electric wires can provide an additional deterrent. The electric component depends on correct training, grounding, vegetation control and routine testing; it is not a substitute for fixing a physical gap.

Training area

Introduce pigs to an energized boundary where they cannot simply rush forward after contact. Observe the group, make sure feed and water do not encourage pressure on the fence, and keep a physical backup during the learning period.

Rotational divisions

Temporary divisions can change with forage and soil conditions, but their success still depends on trained animals and a dependable outer perimeter. Plan movement before opening a division so pigs do not collect at an unprotected corner or gate.

Inspect the predictable failure points.

Add biosecurity to the fence plan.

USDA APHIS treats fencing as one part of outdoor-pig biosecurity. The farm plan also needs wildlife control, clean feed and water, visitor and equipment practices, animal sourcing and a written biosecurity routine. Where feral swine or reportable disease risk is relevant, consult the current animal-health authority and a veterinarian rather than relying on a general web specification.
