Plan one boundary for cattle and goats.

Start with the harder-to-contain animal and assign each fence component a job. This example combines a dependable physical boundary, a goat-tight lower zone, an inside electric offset and deliberate gates—without pretending head count determines fence length.

Illustrative, not a universal specification. The dimensions and 5% allowance are invented so the arithmetic can be audited. Confirm fence height, openings, conductor positions, energizer and local requirements for your animals and site.

One boundary, four separate jobs

Cattle pressure, goat climbing or reaching behavior, horns, predators and vehicle movement do not disappear when animals share a field. A useful plan separates what must remain permanent from what can remain flexible.

The worked layout

This example uses a 1,600 ft measured outer route and one 600 ft permanent divider. Two gate openings total 36 ft. Temporary grazing subdivisions are deliberately excluded from the woven-wire roll calculation.

  • Horns trigger an entanglement review before mesh selection.
  • Gates and lanes must work for both large cattle and smaller goats.
  • Water, shade and handling flow are mapped before the divider is fixed.
  • Temporary electric lines are planned as management tools, not treated as the secure perimeter.

04 · Control contact

The offset is a behavior layer

A smooth electric offset can discourage cattle leaning and goats climbing or rubbing on the physical fence. It is not a substitute for a suitable perimeter. Train animals in a controlled area, keep vegetation from draining the system, and test performance at the fence—not only at the energizer.

Do not electrify barbed wire. Conductor position, visibility, grounding, warning signs and energizer selection require local design and manufacturer guidance.

Questions buyers and farmers ask

Can one fence hold cattle and goats?

Yes, but design the shared boundary around the more demanding containment behavior. A cattle-only layout may leave lower openings, climbing opportunities or gate gaps that goats exploit.

Can I adapt an existing cattle fence?

Often, after a route-by-route inspection. Check the lower section, washouts, gates, corners and interfaces; then decide whether goat-tight mesh, repairs or a smooth inside offset can address the verified gaps.

Woven wire, electric, or both?

A dependable woven perimeter plus an inside electric deterrent is a common role-based combination. Temporary electric divisions may be useful after training, but they do not automatically replace the permanent boundary.

What changes when goats have horns?

Horned goats increase entanglement risk. Review mesh openings, feed placement, reaching behavior and inspection frequency, and avoid layouts that invite animals to push their heads through.

Do cattle and goats need separate gates?

Not always. The shared gate must control the smaller animal at the bottom and sides while remaining wide, strong and well placed for cattle, vehicles and handling flow.

How many acres does this example assume?

None. Stocking and forage capacity depend on local production, animal demand, season and management. The example starts only from measured fence lines.

Evidence, sources and limits

Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends mapping first, using dependable permanent perimeter fencing and planning gates and movement before subdivision. Penn State notes that goats require tight fencing and that an inside electric strand can discourage climbing and entanglement. Oklahoma State emphasizes containment, protection, maintenance and durability, and warns against electrifying barbed wire. These sources support the decision sequence; the numbers above remain an invented example.
