What gauge wire for a cattle fence?
12.5-gauge is the cattle standard. In high-tensile and woven field fence it carries the load of cattle leaning and rubbing while staying economical and easy to source. For perimeter fence holding large cattle, bulls or bison — or where predators push on the fence — heavier 9 to 11 gauge adds strength and impact resistance. Lighter 14 gauge suits temporary paddock divisions and interior cross-fencing where full strength isn’t needed.

Barbed wire gauge
Standard barbed wire is 15.5 gauge (often a 2-strand 15.5-ga line with 14-ga barbs). For heavy stock or longer high-tension spans, 12.5-gauge barbed wire is stronger and holds tension better over distance. Heavier 18-gauge appears in some light-duty rolls but is not recommended as a cattle perimeter.
Cattle panel wire gauge & structural load
Welded cattle and utility panels are a different category — they use thick 4 to 6 gauge rod welded at every crossing, which is why a rigid panel carries far more structural load than a single strand of fence wire. A typical 16-ft cattle panel uses 4-ga rod; lighter utility/hog panels run to 6 ga. The welded grid, not just the rod thickness, gives panels their stiffness and load capacity.
How to choose the right gauge
- By livestock: cows/steers — 12.5 ga; bulls/bison — 9-11 ga; calves/temporary — 14 ga; panels for pens/working areas — 4-6 ga.
- By environment: high wind, rough terrain or predator pressure — go heavier (9-11 ga). Calm interior divisions — lighter is fine.
- By budget & span: 12.5-ga high-tensile covers long runs with fewer posts at lower cost than heavier woven; panels cost more per foot but install fast in pens.
