S-Knot Livestock Fence Wire: Construction and Buying Checklist

Before you choose

Identify the construction, compare a documented model and ask for intended-use information. S-knot is not a universal wire grade, safety rating or lifespan guarantee.

What S-knot describes

In Bekaert's catalogue, an S-knot is a separate piece of wire connecting the horizontal line wire to a solid vertical stay. That describes an intersection, not the complete fence specification. See the manufacturer's construction description — https://www.bekaert.com/en/product-catalog/content/fencing.

Square Deal® is Red Brand's branded knot name. Other catalogues may use “square knot” or “S-knot”; do not infer that different names, I-knots, X-knots or ring-lock products are interchangeable. Request a drawing and a close-up of the offered model.

Build a product-specific specification

This page is not a stock specification sheet. Do not combine dimensions from several suppliers into a product that no supplier has confirmed.

Ask each supplier for the same documented inputs

Wire grade is separate from knot style

Ask which grade applies to each wire component. Do not infer high-tensile steel, a breaking load or a post-saving percentage from the term S-knot.

Coating needs its own evidence

A coating-class label is not a service-life prediction. Record the exact standard edition and product basis, then request the applicable documents. Use the specification and standard-reference guide to organize questions, not to certify a product.

Check the intended animals and site

Manufacturer horse-fence catalogues include S-knot or Square Deal product families. That is a reason to examine the proposed model, not a blanket suitability decision for every horse, cow, sheep or goat.

Record species, animal size, horns where relevant, expected contact with the fence, perimeter or internal-paddock use, terrain, gates and exposure. Ask the supplying company for intended-use documentation, and arrange a qualified site/design review where containment failure or animal injury could have serious consequences.

“Non-climb” is a product description, not a promise that climbing, entrapment or injury cannot occur. Knot shape alone does not establish a safe opening size or justify a recommendation for aggressive stock, handling areas or roadside boundaries.

Compare construction, then the complete product

Hinge-joint, fixed-knot and S-knot products should be compared against the same project requirement. Do not use a universal strongest/safest/cheapest ranking. The three-knot comparison guide separates construction identification from documented product performance.

Find catalogue leads without assuming qualification

Our existing Tailong and KUNYU FENCING profiles record official S-knot catalogue leads and source-review limits. You can also use the S-knot directory filter.

A catalogue listing is not independent verification of a factory, capacity, certification, stock or delivery performance. No factory ownership, production capacity, certification or guaranteed reply time is claimed on this page.

Confirm documents for the offered order

Ask who manufactures and supplies the model, which specification is offered, and what order-specific inspection documents can be provided. A standard number in marketing text does not establish compliance. Keep unanswered points explicit.

Request packing and delivery data

Obtain roll count, external dimensions, net and gross mass, securing method, pallet configuration if offered, labels and destination delivery terms. Ask for a loading proposal based on those actual values. There is no universal rolls-per-container capacity for all S-knot products.

Record requested changes separately from confirmed options. Custom heights, openings, coating, branding, minimum quantities and lead times remain subject to a written supplier response.

Before installation: obtain the exact product manual

This buying guide does not prescribe post spacing, bracing, tension, tools or a mesh pattern for field installation. Obtain the current manual for the selected model and have the site layout reviewed by an appropriately qualified installer or designer. Do not reuse a spacing or tension value from a different fence family.

Unresolved product identity, intended use or installation requirements are reasons to pause selection and obtain clarification, not to substitute generic web advice.

Compare quotations on one requirement revision

Use matching quantities and specifications. Separate fence rolls, posts, braces, accessories, packing, freight, taxes where applicable and installation. Record quotation date, currency, delivery basis and exclusions. Do not assume a fixed price position or a savings percentage from knot style.

Any lifetime-cost comparison needs explicit assumptions for maintenance and replacement; neither is established here. Keep supplier projections separate from observed evidence.

S-knot buying questions

Is S-knot the same as high-tensile fence?

No. S-knot describes the connection at an intersection; wire grade is a separate specification. Ask for the proposed model's dated wire-grade and diameter record.

Does non-climb mean a fence cannot injure an animal?

No. Non-climb is used in product naming, not as a zero-injury guarantee. The intended animals, mesh openings, exposed surfaces and complete installation need a product-specific assessment.

Can I choose post spacing from the knot name?

No. Obtain the current manual for the exact product and have the layout, soil, terrain, posts and bracing reviewed by an appropriately qualified installer or designer.

How do I compare two S-knot offers?

Use one requirement revision and request matching construction drawings, mesh patterns, separate wire diameters, coating specifications, roll quantities and delivery terms. Mark missing responses rather than treating them as equivalent.

Prepare the enquiry

Start with the materials and RFQ worksheet. Save a requirement revision, then use the supplier-response comparison to record what is supported, missing or different. This does not send an enquiry automatically.

Keep dated supporting files in the document register. Carry the agreed model and document references into the receiving record; that record is not a substitute for contractual or technical acceptance.

Confirm one documented fence design

Download the specification record and attach the offered model's drawing, source URL and document date. Keep each wire component separate, and record revisions before accepting a quotation.

Sources and review boundary
