The example in one view

A small herd does not automatically mean a short fence. Parcel shape, existing boundaries, water, access and the number of divisions control the line length. Here, the example uses one secure outer boundary and one permanent divider; temporary subdivisions remain a later management choice.

Questions people ask about fencing 10 cattle

How much fence do I need for 10 cows?

There is no reliable feet-per-cow rule. Measure the outer route, add permanent dividers, subtract only gate openings that replace fence, choose a disclosed allowance and divide by the confirmed roll length.

How many acres do 10 cattle need?

That is a carrying-capacity question, not a fence-length input. Forage production, animal size, grazing season, utilization and management all affect stocking rate. Use local forage records and extension or grazing-professional guidance rather than copying the acreage from this example.

How many 330-foot rolls are in this example?

Six. The example produces 1,672 ft of net measured line and 1,755.6 ft after the selected 5% allowance; dividing by 330 and rounding up gives six whole rolls.

Should a small herd use only one fence type?

Not necessarily. A secure perimeter, permanent divider and temporary subdivision have different jobs. Select each role from animal behavior, site conditions, management, maintenance and local requirements.

Can I calculate posts from the six-roll result?

No. Count posts and bracing from the actual geometry, including starts, ends, corners, direction changes, gates, ground conditions and the approved product or project detail.

NRCS Fence 382 supports a plan view showing the fence and gates plus installation details and material quantities, while warning that the national standard is not a substitute for the local Field Office Technical Guide. Oklahoma State’s stocking-rate method begins with forage supply and animal demand, not a universal acres-per-head value. Penn State identifies perimeter versus subdivision role, topography, gates, lanes and existing infrastructure as planning inputs.
